Civic Anniversary Meeting
You are invited!
Long before most of us moved here, and long before there was a mayor-council-city manager government, there was a Cape Coral Civic Association.
On April 2, 1962 Civic elected its first President, Verne J. Schlegel and Board of Directors, and according to news paper accounts Cape’s population was 1605 people including 406 children. The first general meeting of the Civic Association took place on Monday June 4, 1962 at the “new Cape Coral Yacht and Racquet Club,” and we have been meeting there ever since. On Sept. 17, 1963 the Civic Association incorporated in the State of Florida.
Today, the Cape Coral Civic Association continues to be a “forum for people” for discussion of issues affecting our city. On behalf of the more than 250 Civic members we wish to extend an open invitation to the general public to come and help celebrate Civics’ 42nd anniversary since incorporation.
Update:9/28/2005.
What a fantastict fun filled evening we had last night at Civic and I want to thank all those who contributed by their presence.

Last month Civic celebrated it’s 42nd year of incorporation in 1963. Approximately 90 people attended the meeting and the feedback has been totally positive from all who attended, including special guest Betty Graf. Betty is the widow of former Mayor, Don Graf who was the first city wide elected mayor in 1975. Prior to becoming mayor, Don served on Civic’s first board of directors in 1962.
Civic recognized and honored City Clerk Bonnie Vent for her 30 years service to the City. Bonnie, sometimes referred to as “the person who knows were all the bones are hidden in the city” named and commented on each city manager she has worked for since day one. Bonnie also named every mayor with the exception of one who she said with a smile would go unnamed intentionally. The audience appreciated her sense of humor! Both Betty and Bonnie were presented with flowers from the association and there was a cake for Bonnie.
Civic also paused to thank and present plaques of appreciation for service as past presidents to; Ed Steinberg, Lyndia Bradley and Larry Murphy who are active members of Civic.
